Aegean Airlines counts as an EU/EEA airline, so these rules can apply both to flights departing the EU/EEA and to flights into the EU/EEA that Aegean Airlines operates. The route and the actual operating carrier always decide a specific case.

How EU261 applies to Aegean Airlines

As a Community air carrier licensed in the EU/EEA, Aegean's flights normally fall within the scope of Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 both on departure from the EU/EEA and on arrival in the EU/EEA from a third country, provided that Aegean, or another EU/EEA carrier, such as its subsidiary Olympic Air, is the operating air carrier. The route and the carrier that actually operates the flight are always decisive in the individual case: not every flight sold under the Aegean brand is automatically covered.

Who operates the flight

Olympic Air was acquired by Aegean Airlines in 2013 (cleared by the European Commission, case IP/13/927) and, according to the HCAA's register (retrieved 3 July 2026), is a separately licensed Greek air carrier (licence no. ΑΠΑ/21633/18-07-2025). Flights within the group may therefore have Olympic Air as the operating air carrier; since Olympic Air is likewise EU-licensed, this does not affect whether Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 applies, but the claim is directed at the carrier that actually operated the flight.

More about Aegean Airlines

According to Aegean's notice on Regulation 261, its Customer Relations takes claims through the website under Help & Contact or by fax, and Aegean says its call centre operates around the clock for urgent changes, cancelled flights and check-in issues, in English or Greek if no agent in your language is available. The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) says passengers should contact the airline first and then, if there is no reply or the reply is unsatisfactory, can send the complaint to the authority with, among other things, a copy of the ticket, boarding pass, receipts and correspondence. According to HCAA, it asks the airline to respond within six weeks, and it states that it does not process complaints where it is not clear that the airline was contacted first.
