Air France counts as an EU/EEA airline, so these rules can apply both to flights departing the EU/EEA and to flights into the EU/EEA that Air France operates. The route and the actual operating carrier always decide a specific case.

How EU261 applies to Air France

Air France is a Community air carrier, which means that Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 normally covers both flights departing from the EU/EEA and flights from a third country into the EU/EEA where Air France is the operating air carrier. The route and the actual operating air carrier are nevertheless always decisive in the individual case. Codeshare flights operated by a third-country carrier from a third country into the EU are not covered.

Who operates the flight

The airline's official claims page handles claims concerning "an Air France, KLM, or Delta Air Lines flight" through the same channel, which reflects partner and codeshare arrangements. On AF-marketed flights the actual operating air carrier may therefore be a carrier other than Air France. The exact operating arrangement for a given flight has to be checked booking by booking.

More about Air France

According to the Air France-KLM Group website, the group has two international hubs, Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam-Schiphol, and in 2025 served more than 320 destinations in over 100 countries through Air France, KLM and Transavia, so the operating carrier may differ from the brand on your ticket. The French civil aviation authority DGAC, France's designated enforcement body for Regulation 261/2004, says you can send a complaint to the airline's customer service, keep copies of what you send, and wait at least two months before contacting the DGAC. According to the DGAC, its role is to oversee compliance, while individual compensation can be decided by the competent court.
