SATA strike in the Azores: times and your flight rights

At a glance

SATA warns that a ground-handling strike may affect SATA Air Açores and Azores Airlines. From 28 October to 3 November, the announced daily stoppage is 16:00–19:00 local time in the Azores. No confirmed total of affected flights is provided. Check your booking and connections; a strike notice does not mean every flight is cancelled.

Strike notice and contingency arrangements; no complete impact count

Confirmed: SATA’s official notices identify the strike windows and affected handling services. The passenger notice lists minimum-service flights for SATA Air Açores and advance-change options subject to availability.

Still uncertain: A complete list or total of actual cancellations, participation, final arrival delays and the outcome for individual bookings. A minimum-service list is not the full operating schedule.

What to do now

  1. Check the date and local time

Use the Azores time on your booking and check the airline’s current flight status. A flight outside the stated window is not automatically unaffected.

  2. Check your connections

Review the full itinerary, including any inter-island connection. Ask the airline about alternatives if a change leaves a connection unusable.

  3. Separate voluntary changes from cancellations

Ask whether SATA’s advance-change offer applies to your booking. A voluntary change before a cancellation does not automatically give the same rights as an airline cancellation.

  4. Keep notices, arrival times and receipts

Save the original itinerary, personal notice and the actual arrival time. Ask for necessary assistance during a qualifying wait and keep reasonable receipts.

Your passenger rights

Flights within the Azores and departures from the islands normally fall within EU261. For arrivals from outside the EU, check the operating carrier. Fixed compensation, travel alternatives and care are separate assessments.

Alternatives if the airline cancels

For an EU261 cancellation you may be able to choose reimbursement or rerouting under the regulation. The strike notice alone does not create the same cancellation rights.

Help during a qualifying wait

Meals and necessary accommodation and transfers may apply independently of fixed compensation. Check the applicable waiting-time conditions.

Handling services do not decide the answer

The employer, the airline’s actual control, the cause of the flight’s disruption and reasonable measures matter. Do not assume either automatic compensation or an automatic strike exemption.

Checked 27 October: announced daily stoppages

  • The next announced window is 28 October–3 November, 16:00–19:00 local time in the Azores.
  • The earlier period is 21–27 October, 07:30–10:30. Neither window is a notice of an all-day airport closure.
  • SATA identifies handling services that may affect both airlines. It does not supply a complete total of actual cancellations.

Check the full journey, not just the departure time

A handling stoppage may affect check-in, baggage or an aircraft’s turnaround. The notice does not establish which individual flights will be cancelled or their final arrival delays.

If your trip includes an inter-island connection, check whether the revised itinerary still works. A scheduled time outside the strike window does not establish that a flight will avoid all knock-on effects.

Minimum services and advance booking changes

SATA lists designated minimum-service flights for SATA Air Açores. This is not a complete timetable or a guarantee for an individual booking; follow the current flight status and personal notice.

The passenger notice offers advance changes to flights outside the strike periods, between 18 October and 10 November, subject to availability. Check whether the offer applies to your ticket. Voluntary flexibility and statutory rights after a cancellation are different.

Can this strike qualify for EU261 compensation?

A qualifying cancellation or arrival delay of at least three hours may make fixed compensation relevant. Notification timing, replacement travel and the documented cause still matter; notification at least 14 days before a cancellation normally excludes fixed cancellation compensation.

Calling workers ground handlers does not decide whether the event is extraordinary. The actual employer, the carrier’s control, the link to the specific flight and reasonable measures need to be assessed.

The Court’s official summary of case C-405/23 discusses actual airline control in an airport baggage-staff shortage. That case concerns staff shortages, not this SATA strike, and does not decide an individual passenger’s claim.

Travel alternatives and care are separate questions

For a qualifying cancellation, reimbursement or rerouting may be available even when fixed compensation is not payable. Necessary meals, accommodation and transfers depend on the applicable conditions during the wait.

Keep the personal flight notice, the alternative offered and the actual arrival time at your final destination. Save reasonable receipts if required assistance is not provided. Read more about cancelled flights and delays.
