easyJet winter cuts: your rights if a booked flight is cancelled

At a glance

If your booked easyJet flight is cancelled and EU261 applies, you can choose a refund or re-routing. Compensation may also be due after short notice. A reduction in planned capacity alone does not create a compensation claim.

Confirmed: A further approximately 600,000–700,000 seats have been removed from the winter programme.

Still uncertain: Which existing bookings are affected. Removed seats do not equal cancelled passenger bookings.

What to do now

  1. Check the departure you booked

Open easyJet’s booking management. A reduction in winter capacity does not mean your particular departure has been cancelled.

  2. Compare re-routing with your plans

If easyJet cancels your flight, request alternatives and check their times and final destination before choosing a refund.

  3. Record when you were personally notified

Keep the email, text message and date. The winter-programme news date does not establish notification of your specific cancellation.

  4. Keep expenses and airline replies

Save the booking and responses to your re-routing requests. Ask for necessary care if you are left waiting at the airport.

Your passenger rights

These rights concern flights covered by EU261. Departure, operating carrier and the actual disruption determine what you can claim.

Re-routing or refund

If a covered booked flight is cancelled, choose re-routing or a refund. A capacity announcement alone does not create a claim.

Care while waiting

Care may apply while awaiting the earliest re-routing. It does not automatically cover costs of a future holiday.

Possible financial compensation

Commercial capacity planning is normally within the airline’s control. Late personal notification may allow compensation, subject to the journey and re-routing offered.

What has been reported?

On 8 October 2026, The Irish Times/Financial Times reported another planned reduction of 600,000–700,000 easyJet winter seats, following an earlier cut of about 700,000. High fuel costs were the reported reason.

The reported winter season runs from October to the end of March. Together, the two reductions represent about 1.3–1.4 million seats. That is removed capacity, rather than an established number of cancelled flights or affected bookings.

Which flights are covered?

Check the route and the operating easyJet company. EU261 generally covers departures from the EU/EEA and arrivals there from third countries operated by an EU/EEA carrier. A UK-operated flight from the UK to the EU is not automatically covered by EU261. Departures from the UK are normally covered by the UK rules (UK261), and Airlate does not currently handle claims under them.

Can this cause qualify for compensation?

Reducing capacity to save costs is ordinarily a commercial decision within the airline's control. This is our assessment under the extraordinary-circumstances exception, rather than a ruling on any individual easyJet flight.

Notice and re-routing matter

For cancellation, standard compensation is normally not due after at least 14 days' notice. With 7–14 days' notice, the exception requires offered re-routing departing no more than two hours early and arriving less than four hours late. With less than seven days' notice, the limits are no more than one hour early and less than two hours late. The airline must prove when it notified you.

Compensation when the conditions are met

The amount depends on distance and whether a re-routing reduction applies.

Flight distanceCompensation level
Flights up to 1,500 km€250
1,500–3,500 km (and longer intra-EU flights)€400
Flights over 3,500 km€600

The amounts apply per passenger.

The airline may halve the amount if it offers rerouting that arrives no more than 2 hours (up to 1,500 km), 3 hours (1,500–3,500 km and longer intra-EU flights) or 4 hours (other flights over 3,500 km) after the original arrival time (Article 7(2)). For a delay on a flight over 3,500 km to or from a country outside the EU, the amount may also be halved if you arrive at least three but less than four hours late (Court of Justice, Sturgeon and Others, paragraph 63).

Refunds, re-routing and care

On cancellation, choose a refund or re-routing at the earliest opportunity, or a suitable later date subject to availability. While awaiting earliest-opportunity re-routing, care can include reasonable meals, refreshments, communication, and accommodation and transfers when an overnight stay is necessary. These rights also apply when standard compensation is not due. Keep receipts if the airline does not provide care.
