What to do now

  1. Check your own flight

Read your airline’s personal message and flight status before travelling to the airport. Resumed operations do not mean every flight is on time or your cancellation has been withdrawn.

  2. Ask about onward transport after a diversion

Ask the airline how you will reach your booked destination. Keep transfer and replacement-flight messages and record actual arrival at your final destination.

  3. Request alternatives and care

For cancellation, ask about re-routing or reimbursement. During a qualifying wait, request meals and necessary accommodation with transport. Keep receipts if necessary assistance is not provided.

  4. Keep records and raise the issue promptly

Save your booking, boarding passes, messages and reasonable expense receipts. Contact the airline promptly if you wish to make a claim. Airlate can help assess your booking.

Your passenger rights

Ibiza and Palma departures are normally covered by EU261 regardless of airline. For arrivals, origin and operating carrier need checking. Weather can affect standard compensation without automatically removing cancellation assistance or care during a qualifying wait.

Re-routing or reimbursement

For a cancellation covered by EU261, a choice between reimbursement and re-routing may be due. Rain or a warning alone does not make a still-operating ticket refundable.

Help during a qualifying wait

Meals, communications and necessary accommodation with transport may be due when the conditions are met. Care is assessed separately from standard compensation, even where weather caused the disruption.

Compensation needs individual assessment

Heavy rain and safety stoppages can be extraordinary circumstances. The airline needs to establish the connection to your disruption and that reasonable measures could not avoid it. No compensation amount is automatic.

Update, 18 October at 20:10: 64 cancellations across both airports

  • Europa Press cites Aena for 37 cancellations at Palma and 27 at Ibiza, totalling 64 across the two airports.
  • The report also records 16 diversions at Ibiza and numerous Palma delays. It does not identify airlines, flight numbers or final arrival delays.
  • This evening snapshot supersedes the earlier impact reports below. Do not add the counts from different reports together.

Earlier report, 18 October: morning stoppages and rain warning

  • Aena says, according to EFE, that the two morning stoppages resulted in 16 diversions and 5 cancellations. These figures cover 10:00–12:15, without establishing the final daily total.
  • Operations resumed after the necessary works. That does not mean every flight was punctual or every affected traveller had arrived.
  • At 15:01 local time, Cadena SER reports a regional warning of more heavy rain during the afternoon. That warning does not confirm another airport stoppage.
  • Earlier, La Voz de Ibiza reported its own count of 17 diversions and cited Flightradar24 for 15 cancellations at 13:17. That provisional report is retained as history; Europa Press later reported Aena’s evening figures above.

Why do the Ibiza figures differ?

The reports describe different snapshots during the day. EFE cited Aena for 16 diversions and 5 cancellations during the morning. La Voz de Ibiza used its own diversion count and a separate Flightradar24 snapshot at 13:17.

Europa Press later cites Aena for 27 Ibiza cancellations and 16 Ibiza diversions, plus 37 Palma cancellations. The evening report is this article’s latest reviewed impact snapshot. Earlier counts must not be added to it.

Mallorca flights also affected

The earlier Majorca Daily Bulletin report did not include an Aena count. Europa Press now cites Aena for 37 Palma cancellations in its report published at 20:10 local time, alongside numerous delays.

Majorca Daily Bulletin also cites controllers on weather-related traffic flow measures and ground delays. This does not establish a Palma airport closure or the same cause for every disrupted flight. Check your own booking.

Why were operations interrupted twice?

EFE’s account of Aena’s notice describes an initial safety stoppage during intense rain. Water accumulating on the airfield then required another interruption while drainage work was carried out.

Operations could resume once the works were completed. For your own journey, you still need to follow the airline’s flight status, rebooking and actual arrival.

The two reported stoppages on 18 October
Local time (CEST, UTC+2)Reported reason
10:00–11:00Intense rain and safety concerns.
11:15–12:15Water accumulating on the airfield and drainage work.

What does a diversion mean for your journey?

A diverted aircraft lands at an airport other than the planned one. This is not automatically a cancellation under EU261; how the airline completes the journey and where you ultimately arrive matter.

Ask about onward transport and keep the actual times. The sources do not establish a complete affected-flight list or final delays, so airport-wide totals cannot decide your booking’s position.

Which Ibiza and Mallorca journeys are covered by EU261?

Ibiza and Palma departures leave from the EU and are normally covered regardless of airline. Arrivals from another EU airport can also be covered regardless of carrier. For a journey starting outside the EU and arriving in Ibiza or Palma, the operating airline normally needs to be an EU carrier.

Check the airline actually operating the flight and whether connections are part of one booking. Read about cancelled flights and delayed flights.
