Another flight problemWhat to do now
Check your booking
Follow your airline’s flight status and personal messages. Check again before leaving for the airport: general strike hours are not a cancellation list.
Check before cancelling voluntarily
If your flight is still scheduled, your own cancellation may fall under the ticket conditions. Ask the airline to explain your options before deciding.
Request alternatives if cancelled
Ask about re-routing or reimbursement under EU261’s conditions. Your choice may affect other travel options and continuing care.
Keep the evidence
Save your booking, notification, stated cause and actual arrival time. Keep reasonable receipts if necessary assistance is not provided.
Your passenger rights
Departures from Italy normally fall within EU261. For arrivals, scope depends on departure point and operating airline. Rights are assessed against the actual disruption to your journey.
Re-routing or reimbursement
May apply to a cancellation covered by EU261. A strike notice alone does not create the same rights.
Help while waiting
For qualifying waits, meals, necessary accommodation and transfers may be covered. Care is assessed separately from fixed compensation.
Compensation needs assessment
Who strikes and what the demands concern matter. Demands only public authorities can meet may make even an own-staff strike extraordinary.
Situation checked on 28 October
- Naples Airport’s warning is dated 22 October and predates the reported postponement order.
- ANSA reported the order on 27 October. USB’s own statement that day says it will defy it.
- This does not establish participation or individual flight status on 30 October.
Why is the situation uncertain?
According to ANSA, aviation is among the sectors covered by the postponement order. USB confirms receiving it but maintains its strike call. The dispute concerns whether action proceeds; it is not an airport closure announcement.
Naples Airport’s earlier warning concerns possible delays and cancellations. Check current airline messages even if that older airport warning remains online.
What do protected flight times mean?
ENAC lists a no-strike period from 30 October to 5 November. Its general rules also identify protected flight periods of 07:00–10:00 and 18:00–21:00 local time, with detailed rules for different services.
These rules do not replace the status of your flight. We have not verified a specific guaranteed-flight list for 30 October; flights outside those windows are not automatically cancelled either.
Could disruption qualify for compensation?
EU261 separates fixed compensation from travel alternatives and care. For cancellations, personal notice and offered re-routing matter: at least 14 days’ notice normally excludes fixed cancellation compensation.
An employment-conditions strike by an airline’s staff is normally within its control. However, paragraph 45 of C-28/20 explains that demands only public authorities can meet may constitute extraordinary circumstances. USB describes broad political and economic demands. The participants’ employer alone therefore cannot justify a promise of compensation.
The airline must demonstrate the link to the particular disruption and that reasonable measures could not have avoided it. The journey, documented cause and actual arrival delay determine the assessment.
If your journey is affected
Ask the airline about re-routing or reimbursement and necessary help while waiting. A long delay may trigger other rights. A refusal of fixed compensation does not automatically settle travel alternatives or care.
Frequently asked questions
No. ANSA reports a postponement order covering sectors including aviation. USB says it will defy it, but participation and flight impact have not been established.
The strike notice cannot establish that. Check your booking, flight status and personal airline messages. The reviewed sources contain no confirmed cancellation list.
The general rules identify 07:00–10:00 and 18:00–21:00 local time. Still check with your airline: these windows are not your individual flight status.
No. Demands aimed at public authorities, actual control, cause, notice and offered alternatives can affect the assessment. Re-routing and care are separate questions.
Check the ticket conditions before cancelling solely because of a general notice. Voluntary cancellation can have different consequences from the airline cancelling your flight.
