KLM winter flight cancellations: your passenger rights
At a glance
KLM is reducing its winter schedule as aircraft remain unavailable for maintenance and repairs. If your booked flight is cancelled, rebooking or a refund may be due. A late personal cancellation notice can also matter for compensation.

Another flight problemWhat to do now
Open your booking before changing plans
Check KLM’s personal message and the flight shown in your booking. A general winter announcement is not confirmation that your own departure has been removed.
Check your whole itinerary through Amsterdam
Compare the arrival at your final destination and the connection time. Tell KLM if its replacement no longer allows you to make an onward flight on the same booking.
Choose your travel alternative deliberately
Ask about re-routing if you still need to travel. Compare the complete journey before accepting a refund, which ends the obligation to re-route the refunded ticket.
Keep the notice and the technical explanation
Save when KLM notified you, what alternative it offered and its explanation for this flight. Keep receipts and request necessary assistance if you are left waiting.
Your passenger rights
EU261 normally covers KLM-operated departures from the EU/EEA and KLM-operated return flights into it. For a codeshare, check the operating carrier rather than only the KL booking code.
An alternative journey or a refund
For a covered cancellation, you choose reimbursement or re-routing at the earliest opportunity; a later suitable date is another option subject to seats. Advance notice does not remove this choice.
Help while waiting for replacement travel
Reasonable meals and, where necessary, accommodation and hotel transfers can be due while waiting for the earliest re-routing. Costs for a future holiday are not automatically covered.
Notice and the actual defect both matter
Ordinary aircraft maintenance is generally within the airline’s control. Compensation still depends on the personal notice, replacement timing and cause of your flight’s cancellation.
Why is KLM changing the winter programme?
NOS reports that unplanned maintenance, damage repairs, longer workshop work and delayed parts are leaving more aircraft unavailable. The programme reduction is intended to make day-to-day operations more reliable.
ANP, via NL Times, also reports at least five intercontinental routes cancelled at short notice the preceding weekend. That historical report is not a forecast of winter cancellations.
A programme change is not a cancellation notice for your booking
No complete list of affected routes or flight numbers was established in the reviewed reports. Do not cancel a flight that remains scheduled solely because of the news. Follow your individual KLM message.
A technical fault is not automatically an exemption
In van der Lans v KLM, the Court of Justice held that unexpected ordinary technical defects can be inherent in normal airline operations. A maintenance backlog or lack of available aircraft does not itself demonstrate an extraordinary circumstance.
The origin of a particular defect matters. A hidden manufacturing defect revealed by the manufacturer, sabotage or another exceptional external event needs separate examination. A broad statement about fleet availability does not determine your case.
Your cancellation message matters more than the news date
For cancellation compensation, the regulation distinguishes notice at least two weeks before departure from shorter notice. Qualifying replacement timing can also exempt the airline from compensation. The airline must prove when you personally received the notice.
This means two passengers travelling during the same winter period can have different outcomes. Someone informed well in advance may still choose re-routing or reimbursement; a passenger whose later departure is cancelled at short notice needs a separate assessment.
Possible compensation if the conditions are met
The distance and any applicable reduction for replacement travel determine the amount.
| Flight distance | Compensation level |
|---|---|
| Flights up to 1,500 km | €250 |
| 1,500–3,500 km (and longer intra-EU flights) | €400 |
| Flights over 3,500 km | €600 |
The amounts apply per passenger.
The airline may halve the amount if it offers rerouting that arrives no more than 2 hours (up to 1,500 km), 3 hours (1,500–3,500 km and longer intra-EU flights) or 4 hours (other flights over 3,500 km) after the original arrival time (Article 7(2)). For a delay on a flight over 3,500 km to or from a country outside the EU, the amount may also be halved if you arrive at least three but less than four hours late (Court of Justice, Sturgeon and Others, paragraph 63).
Check connecting flights and the operating carrier
A replacement departure from Amsterdam may still leave you with an unworkable connection. Ask KLM to deal with the itinerary on your single booking, rather than comparing the first leg alone. Separate tickets require a different assessment.
A KLM flight number can also be a codeshare. Record the company actually operating the cancelled flight, especially for departures outside the EU/EEA. This matters when deciding which passenger-rights rules apply.
Frequently asked questions
No. Check your booking and personal notification. The reviewed reports do not identify every removed departure.
No. Ordinary technical problems are generally inherent in airline operations. An exceptional external cause requires specific evidence and a link to your flight.
Yes, for a cancellation covered by EU261. Early notice can rule out standard compensation while leaving your choice of reimbursement or re-routing intact.
Compare the whole journey on your single booking and ask KLM for a workable alternative. Save the proposed itinerary and actual final arrival time. Separate tickets may not provide the same protection.
