Naples Airport closed in November: Salerno flight changes

At a glance

According to operator GESAC, Naples Airport is closed to air traffic from 1 to 30 November 2026 for planned runway and taxiway works. Some services use Salerno instead, where GESAC lists 15 destinations. Not every Naples flight has moved, so check your own booking. Refund, re-routing and any compensation depend on the actual change, when you were told and the applicable rules.

Confirmed: GESAC confirms the month-long closure and a partial transfer of services to Salerno, with 15 destinations listed. GESAC and Busitalia Campania run an extra bus between Naples Piazza Garibaldi and Salerno Airport.

Still uncertain: The sources give no complete list of changed or cancelled bookings, no list of airlines that cancelled rather than moved, and no confirmed replacement transport to Rome. We could not read ITA Airways’ own travel notice.

What to do now

  1. Check the airport on your booking

Open the airline’s latest itinerary. Check NAP versus QSR, dates, departure time and any onward connection before arranging transport.

  2. Ask what the change means

If your flight is cancelled or your airport changes, ask about the available re-routing or refund options and any ground-transfer arrangements before accepting an alternative.

  3. Plan the journey to Salerno

According to GESAC, the bus from Piazza Garibaldi costs EUR 12 per trip and runs eight times a day in each direction. Allow more time than for Capodichino, check your terminal, and do not assume your airline pays for the transfer.

  4. Keep the original and revised itinerary

Save the notice and when you received it, booking details, actual arrival time and reasonable expense receipts. These help establish what happened to your journey.

Your passenger rights

Departures from Italy normally fall within EU261. For arrivals from outside the EU, the operating airline also matters. A closure announcement does not determine every passenger’s entitlement.

Notice and cause both matter

Fixed compensation is not automatic. At least 14 days’ personal cancellation notice normally excludes it; later notice, alternatives and the actual cause need assessment.

Re-routing or reimbursement

For a cancellation covered by EU261, these options may be available under the applicable conditions. A planned closure does not remove them.

Assistance during qualifying waits

Meals, necessary accommodation and related transfers may be available when EU261 care conditions are met. This is separate from fixed compensation.

1 November update: the closure is now in effect

  • According to GESAC, Naples is closed to air traffic for the whole of November, starting today.
  • GESAC and Busitalia Campania run an extra bus between Naples Piazza Garibaldi and Salerno Airport: EUR 12 per trip, eight departures a day in each direction, timed to flights, paid on board electronically.
  • Trade site Italiavola reports that ITA Airways flies only to Milan Linate from Salerno in November, with no Rome Fiumicino flights. We could not read ITA’s own notice on any replacement transport to Rome.
  • Still no complete list of cancelled flights or of airlines that cancelled rather than moved.

Earlier position · 30 October: planned closure, partial transfer

  • Naples: scheduled closure to air traffic throughout November for runway and taxiway works.
  • Salerno: some services transferred; 15 destinations listed, not 15 individual flights.
  • No complete cancellation total or flight-by-flight change list is given in the sources reviewed.

Why is Naples Airport closing?

GESAC’s announcement dated 29 October describes planned refurbishment of the runway and taxiways. This is a scheduled infrastructure closure, rather than a strike or an unexpected aircraft technical problem.

The announced closure runs from 1 to 30 November. Follow your airline’s itinerary and updates for your specific travel date, including journeys around the end of the works.

Which flights will use Salerno?

GESAC lists six domestic and nine international destinations at Salerno during November. Examples include Milan Malpensa with easyJet, Barcelona with Vueling, Amsterdam with Transavia and Madrid with Iberia. The airport’s official page contains the full route list.

Only part of the traffic is being transferred. A destination appearing in that list does not confirm that your booking will operate from Salerno at its original time. Check the revised itinerary directly with the airline.

GESAC lists Aeroitalia and ITA Airways on Milan Linate. According to trade site Italiavola, ITA Airways flies only to Linate from Salerno in November and has no Rome Fiumicino flights during the closure. We could not read ITA Airways’ own travel notice on any replacement transport to Rome, so ask the airline directly if your booking connects via Rome.

Getting to Salerno: check transport and terminal

GESAC announces special buses between Naples Piazza Garibaldi and Salerno Airport, more buses to Salerno railway station and shared taxis at fixed fares to the main Naples and Salerno stations. The notice reviewed does not give the fares or timetables.

Update 1 November: GESAC’s bus notice says the Piazza Garibaldi service is run with Busitalia Campania, costs EUR 12 per trip and has eight departures a day in each direction, timed to flights. Tickets are bought on board by electronic payment. The shared-taxi fares are still not published in the sources reviewed.

Both Salerno terminals are planned to operate. The airport says its General Aviation Terminal will handle the Casablanca, Dubai, Sharm el-Sheikh and Madrid services. Check your airline’s terminal and check-in instructions.

Ask the airline whether it will arrange or cover a transfer for your particular booking. A public bus announcement is not confirmation of a free airline transfer, and the airport change alone does not establish which costs are recoverable.

Moved to another airport: who pays the journey?

Article 8(3) of EU261 applies where several airports serve the same town, city or region and the operating airline offers you, as an alternative, a flight to an airport other than the one you booked. The airline must then bear the cost of transferring you from that alternative airport either to the airport you booked or to another close-by destination agreed with you.

Whether Salerno counts as serving the same city or region as Naples, and whether your change is such an offer, needs assessment against your booking. Ask the airline before paying for the transfer yourself, and keep receipts if you do.

Can I choose a refund or another flight?

For a cancellation covered by EU261, you may be entitled to a choice between reimbursement and re-routing under the regulation’s conditions. Check the options before accepting one: choosing reimbursement can affect your entitlement to onward transport and care.

A change of airport needs assessment against the actual booking and proposed alternative. Do not assume that every transferred flight has legally been cancelled, or cancel a still-operating booking yourself before checking the consequences.

Does the planned closure mean compensation?

Neither “planned works” nor “airport closure” automatically settles fixed compensation. The actual cause of your flight’s disruption, the airline’s circumstances and any relevant extraordinary-circumstances defence need assessment.

For cancellations, at least two weeks’ personal notice normally excludes fixed compensation (Article 5(1)(c) EU261). With notice between two weeks and seven days before departure, or later, it depends on the re-routing offered and how close it is to the original schedule. The airline carries the burden of proving when and how you were informed.

The closure was public well in advance: GESAC announced in September that the airport would close in November. That still does not show when you personally received notice, and nor does the 29 October press release.

Travel alternatives and necessary care are separate from fixed compensation. For more information, see cancelled flights and delayed flights. Rights depend on the individual journey and the applicable conditions.
