Panama earthquake flight disruptions: your passenger rights
At a glance
KLM warns of possible disruption to journeys through Panama City on 9–12 October 2026. Tocumen was reported reopened, but connections may still be affected. For a journey covered by EU261, help and replacement travel can remain due even when the earthquake rules out standard compensation.

Another flight problemWhat to do now
Check every leg through Panama
Open the complete booking and check your onward flight as well as arrival at Tocumen. A reopened airport does not establish that your connection will operate normally.
Ask for an itinerary that reaches your destination
If a connection fails, ask the airline to assess the journey on the same booking and possible alternative routes. Compare final arrival, rather than only the replacement first flight.
Request assistance where you are waiting
Ask about meals and any necessary overnight stay before paying for them yourself. If the airline provides no help, retain itemised receipts for reasonable necessary expenses.
Keep the diversion and arrival records
Save the airline’s explanation, rebooking messages and your actual final arrival time. If you land in another country, ask how the airline will complete the journey before arranging onward transport yourself.
Your passenger rights
EU261 can apply to a journey beginning in the EU/EEA, including a connection outside it on the same booking. For a return flight from Panama to the EU/EEA, the operating carrier matters. A separate journey within Latin America is not automatically covered.
Cancellation: re-routing or reimbursement
For a covered cancellation, you can choose a replacement journey or reimbursement. A general travel alert alone does not create an automatic right to a cash refund for a flight still operating.
Assistance can remain due
During a covered disruption, reasonable refreshments and necessary accommodation with transfers can remain due while you wait. The earthquake does not itself remove those duties.
Earthquake-related compensation is unlikely
A natural disaster is normally outside the airline’s control. To rely on the exemption, the airline must establish the link to your disruption and that reasonable measures could not avoid it.
Tocumen reopened; the recovery can still affect your connection
According to The Tico Times, Tocumen temporarily stopped traffic and diverted flights on 9 October. Panama’s aviation authority reported a reopening after inspections found no damage to the runways, terminal or control tower. This is a dated report, not confirmation that every subsequent flight is on time.
An alert is not a confirmed cancellation
KLM warns that flights to, from or via Panama may be disrupted. The reviewed notice does not identify cancelled KLM flight numbers. Check the status of your own booking before changing plans.
KLM’s temporary options are separate from statutory rights
The notice offers date changes within the same available travel class, with rebooking and the new departure by 15 October 2026. Confirm eligibility for your ticket in My Trip or with KLM: the public notice contains an unclear year in its ticket-issue condition.
A voucher offered for a voluntary cancellation is different from the cash reimbursement option that applies to a covered airline cancellation. Read what you are accepting. A trip that continues to operate does not become legally cancelled merely because an alert exists.
| Your journey | What to check |
|---|---|
| One booking departing from the EU/EEA, connecting at PTY | The whole itinerary and final destination can matter even when the disruption occurs outside the EU. |
| Panama–EU/EEA operated by KLM or another EU/EEA carrier | EU261 can apply. Identify the operating carrier, not just the airline selling the ticket. |
| A separate ticket wholly within Latin America | EU261 does not automatically apply. Review the carrier’s conditions, local rights and insurance. |
The airport reopening does not settle the compensation question
Our assessment is that the earthquake and its safety-related airport closure would normally qualify as extraordinary circumstances. That makes standard compensation unlikely when they caused your disruption despite reasonable measures.
The airline still has to explain the link to your flight. A later delay cannot be exempted merely by mentioning the earlier earthquake; the actual cause and efforts to avoid the disruption matter. Keep the explanation you receive.
What if a diverted flight leaves you in another country?
Ask how the carrier will get you to the booked final destination and what assistance is available during the wait. Do not treat a diversion as completion of your itinerary simply because the aircraft landed safely.
If you are offered reimbursement, weigh that against your need to finish the journey. Choosing reimbursement normally ends the obligation to re-route the refunded journey. A separately purchased onward ticket needs its own assessment.
Frequently asked questions
The Tico Times reported a reopening on 9 October after inspections. That does not establish current flight punctuality; follow your airline’s live booking information.
No. It is a warning of possible disruption during 9–12 October. The reviewed notice provides no confirmed list of cancelled KLM flights.
Yes, when EU261 applies and the conditions for assistance are met. Necessary care and re-routing or reimbursement are separate from standard compensation.
Do not assume protection for the complete journey as one booking. Contact both carriers and check the separate ticket conditions and insurance. Save the documents for each flight.
