At a glance
The National reports that Wizz Air has cancelled planned Dubai and Abu Dhabi flights for 25 October 2026–27 March 2027. Booked passengers may have refund or re-routing rights. Standard compensation depends partly on when you were personally notified, not simply the date of the public announcement.

Another flight problemWhat to do now
Check the booking and operating airline
Identify which Wizz Air entity would operate the flight. EU261 scope depends on departure and operating carrier, especially for the UAE return.
Request re-routing even if the route disappears
If you still want to travel, ask Wizz Air to explain alternatives before accepting reimbursement or buying a replacement ticket.
Save when you were personally notified
Keep the cancellation email and date. The press announcement does not replace notification of your individual booking.
Separate the ticket from holiday expenses
Keep airline replies and any expenses. Destination hotels and other advance bookings are not automatically covered by the airline’s care duty.
Your passenger rights
These rights concern flights covered by EU261. Departure, operating carrier and the actual disruption determine what you can claim.
Re-routing or refund
For a covered booking, choose reimbursement or re-routing. Removal of a winter route does not itself eliminate the obligation to offer re-routing.
Care while waiting
Care concerns necessary help during relevant waiting for re-routing. It does not automatically reimburse planned holiday spending.
Possible financial compensation
Timely personal notification may exclude financial compensation. Security and commercial reasons should not be conflated; your flight needs an individual assessment.
What is confirmed: checked 9 October 2026
- On 8 October, The National reported cancellation of the planned Dubai and Abu Dhabi programme for the whole period.
- In its statement to the newspaper, Wizz Air cited regional airspace restrictions, longer routings and commercially unviable operations.
- The former Wizz Air Abu Dhabi subsidiary ceased operations in 2025. Check the operating carrier in your booking; the group name alone does not establish which passenger rules apply.
What remains uncertain?
Affected-booking totals, individual notification times and suitable re-routing options are not established. Earlier figures for the broader Middle East restart should not be confused with the number of cancelled UAE flights.
Keep the notice for each part of your winter journey
A season-long cancellation can affect both your outward and return trip. Check every booked segment, date and operating carrier rather than using the winter programme’s first day. Ask Wizz Air to explain options for the whole booking and identify which part any offered refund covers.
Which passenger rules apply?
EU261 normally covers departures from the EU on any carrier and arrivals into the EU from outside it on an EU carrier. The operating airline and route matter. A strike notice or schedule announcement alone is not proof that your booked flight was cancelled.
Can you claim standard compensation?
Standard compensation for cancellation is normally not due if you were personally informed at least 14 days before your departure. A press announcement alone does not prove notification. Later notice requires assessment of offered re-routing and the actual cause. Security and airspace restrictions may be extraordinary; a commercial reason is not automatically extraordinary.
Refund or re-routing
For a covered cancellation, you should be offered a choice: reimbursement, re-routing at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions, or travel at a later suitable date subject to availability. These rights are separate from standard compensation. If you still want to travel, ask for re-routing before choosing reimbursement.
Food, hotel and help while waiting
When the care rules apply, the airline should provide reasonable meals and communication. Necessary overnight accommodation and transfers may also be required while you await re-routing at the earliest opportunity. Ask the airline to arrange help and keep itemised receipts for reasonable expenses if it fails to do so. Care is not automatic reimbursement of every pre-booked holiday cost.
Request re-routing before choosing a refund
Removing a route does not remove the EU261 right to re-routing. Travel at the earliest opportunity may require another carrier under comparable conditions. Ask Wizz Air for written alternatives and keep its response before arranging replacement travel yourself; reimbursement of self-booked costs needs assessment.
Frequently asked questions
No. Check when the booked passenger was personally informed against their own departure date. At least 14 days’ notice normally excludes standard cancellation compensation, but refund and re-routing are separate rights.
EU261 re-routing under comparable transport conditions can involve another operator. Request alternatives in writing before selecting a refund or buying your own replacement ticket. Reimbursement of costs depends on the circumstances.
Reporting says the former Abu Dhabi operator ceased operations in 2025. Read the operating carrier named on your winter booking. Wizz Air is a group name and does not by itself establish which rules apply.
