Dammam airport after the attack: your passenger rights

At a glance

Dammam airport has resumed normal operations after the 21 October attack, according to GACA’s 22 October update. The authority revised the death toll to two; eight people were injured. KLM’s separate suspension still runs through 31 October. An open airport therefore does not mean your booked flight will operate.

Confirmed: GACA’s SPA follow-up confirms two fatalities, eight injured and normal air traffic restored. KLM separately states that Dammam services remain paused through 31 October.

Still uncertain: Total diversions, delays or cancellations during the interruption, individual flight numbers and final arrival delays. The authority’s notice does not establish every airline has resumed service.

What to do now

  1. Check the airline’s booking notice

Read your personal message and flight status. Normal airport operations do not automatically reverse a cancellation already communicated to you.

  2. Request a confirmed alternative

Ask KLM or your operating carrier about an available onward route. A suspension through 31 October does not guarantee a flight on 1 November.

  3. Ask for necessary care

Where EU261 applies and care conditions are met, request meals and necessary accommodation with transport. Retain reasonable receipts if help is not provided.

  4. Keep your journey timeline

Save the original schedule, cancellation message, rerouting offer and actual arrival time. Ask how the security situation affected your particular flight.

Your passenger rights

EU261 may cover EU departures regardless of airline and flights from Dammam to the EU operated by an EU carrier. Check the operator, booking and actual cause of your disruption.

Options after cancellation

For a cancellation covered by EU261, a choice between reimbursement and rerouting may remain available despite a security-related cause.

Care is assessed separately

Meals, refreshments and necessary accommodation may be due during a qualifying wait. This is separate from fixed compensation.

Security attacks can be extraordinary

The attack and related restrictions point towards extraordinary circumstances. The airline must establish causation and reasonable measures; compensation is not automatic.

Read the background and sources

22 October update: normal operations reported by GACA

  • The authority revised the initial death toll from one to two. Eight people remain reported injured.
  • GACA states that operations resumed and air traffic returned to normal, without giving a disruption total.
  • KLM still lists a Dammam suspension through 31 October. Airport operations and airline service decisions are separate.

The airport is open: why might my flight still be cancelled?

The airport authority’s notice concerns operations at DMM. Airlines make separate decisions about routes, aircraft and crews. KLM’s published suspension illustrates that distinction.

Check the entire journey, including connections and return travel. A ticket does not automatically move to a new departure when an airport reopens.

What is known about the scale?

The reviewed authority statement provides no total for cancelled, delayed or diverted flights. We therefore publish no such count and do not attribute every cancellation to the latest attack.

KLM’s suspension predated the attack. It should not be described as a new consequence of the 21 October incident.
