Another flight problemWhat to do now
Check your personal notice
Open the booking and save when KLM contacted you. The public statement date does not establish when you personally received notice.
Check the entire replacement journey
Compare arrival at the final destination, connections and actual airports. Ask the airline to address connections on the same booking.
Consider alternatives before reimbursement
If you still need to travel, ask about an available replacement before accepting reimbursement. Refunding the ticket generally ends the duty to reroute that ticket.
Keep the reason and receipts
Save the original and new itineraries, notification times and reasonable receipts. Ask what caused your specific cancellation.
Your passenger rights
EU261 normally covers Amsterdam departures regardless of airline, and KLM-operated return flights to the EU. For codeshares, check the operating carrier and full booking.
Rebooking or reimbursement
A qualifying EU261 cancellation can give a choice between reimbursement and rerouting under the regulation. Early notification does not remove these alternatives.
Necessary assistance during a qualifying wait
Meals and necessary accommodation and transfers may be due separately from fixed compensation. A future cancelled holiday does not automatically qualify for hotel costs.
Notice, alternatives and cause matter
At least 14 days’ notice normally excludes fixed cancellation compensation. Later notices still need assessment of re-routing exceptions and any proven extraordinary circumstances.
Confirmed 26 October: three destinations, two end dates
- Dubai: KLM’s Amsterdam service cancelled through 27 March 2027.
- Riyadh and Dammam: cancelled through 27 November 2026.
- KLM says affected passengers will be notified. These are cancellation periods, not promises of restart the next day.
What changed in KLM’s announcement?
The primary update extends previous suspension periods for the named KLM services. It does not mean every airline at Dubai, Riyadh or Dammam has stopped operating.
No affected flight-number or passenger total is given. Check each sector on your booking, including any service operated by another carrier.
Compensation and travel alternatives are separate
Where EU261 applies, a cancellation can give rebooking or reimbursement options even when fixed compensation is not due. Necessary care depends on the situation and qualifying wait.
The October 26 statement gives dates but does not establish the cause of every cancelled flight. Security risks can be extraordinary circumstances; an airline relying on that exemption must show the causal link and reasonable measures.
For fixed cancellation compensation, the time you personally received notice matters. At least 14 days’ notice normally excludes it. With shorter notice, the replacement flight timings and other conditions must also be checked.
Separate from KLM’s technical winter reductions
Our article about KLM’s maintenance-related winter reductions concerns aircraft availability. Those general reductions do not establish the cause of a Middle East cancellation. Check the explanation for your own flight.
Check the airline and airport separately
An airport reopening does not cancel KLM’s separate suspension. Read our Riyadh update and Dammam article for dated background and advice on the airport in your booking.
