France flight strike notice for 17–21 October 2026 suspended – your rights

At a glance

The strike notice for French flight crew on 17–21 October 2026 has been suspended. The announcement came on 9 October, after progress in talks with the government. The unions are waiting for a promised decree and say their mobilisation remains in full if it is not published, so the situation may change. If your flight is still cancelled or significantly delayed, EU261 applies to covered flights: a refund or re-routing, care and, in some cases, fixed compensation.

What to do now

  1. Go by your booking

The notice is suspended. Do not cancel or rebook solely because of the earlier strike notice. Your airline’s message about your flight is what counts.

  2. Check the status before you travel

Check the airline’s app or email in the days before departure. The unions say their mobilisation remains in full if the decree is not published.

  3. Request alternatives if your flight is still cancelled

Ask for re-routing if you still want to travel, and for meals and necessary accommodation while you wait for re-routing at the earliest opportunity.

  4. Keep personal notifications

Record when the airline contacted you, the reason it gave and the departures it offered. Save the booking, actual arrival time and receipts.

Your passenger rights

These rights concern flights covered by EU261. Departure, operating carrier and the actual disruption determine what you can claim.

Re-routing or refund

If a flight covered by EU261 is cancelled, you can choose a refund or re-routing, whatever the cause. A strike notice alone does not trigger that choice.

Care while waiting

When the conditions for care are met, assistance while you wait applies even if the cause is considered an extraordinary circumstance.

Fixed compensation: assessed per flight

Without a strike, a cancellation or delay is assessed in the usual way. If the airline still cites the strike, it must show the causal link. Demands only the state can satisfy may make a strike extraordinary (C-28/20).

What has happened?

In September the unions SNGAF, SNPNC-FO, SNPL, UNAC and UNSA PNC gave notice of a strike from Saturday 17 October 2026 at 00:01 until Wednesday 21 October at 23:59, Paris time. The notice covered pilots and cabin crew at air transport companies governed by French law.

The dispute concerns the reform of the rules on combining work and a pension (cumul emploi-retraite) and the CRPN pension fund. It is separate from Air Corsica’s pilot strike, where SNPL’s notice covered 9–16 October. That strike ended with an agreement on 12 October 2026, and according to AFP flights are operating to the normal schedule from 13 October.

On 9 October SNPNC-FO and UNSA PNC published the decision to suspend the notice for 17–21 October. The unions point to a three-part package: a rewritten circular addressed to the national pension fund CNAV, a decision by the CRPN board on the same day and a decree which, according to the unions, is to be published shortly.

The unions write that the suspension is not a blank cheque and that their mobilisation remains in full if the decree is not published.

If a flight is still cancelled on 17–21 October

While the notice is suspended, the sources we have reviewed show no strike in this dispute that an airline could point to during the period. A cancellation or long delay is then assessed in the usual way, and fixed compensation may be due when the conditions are met.

If an airline nevertheless cites the strike or the notice as the cause, it must show the causal link between that circumstance and your flight, and that the disruption could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.

If the notice is reinstated and a strike goes ahead, the current case law applies. In C-28/20 the EU Court held that a strike by an airline’s own staff to assert the employees’ demands is not an extraordinary circumstance. The Court did, however, distinguish demands that only public authorities can satisfy. Here the pension demands are directed at the state, so Airlate’s preliminary assessment is that this exception may become relevant. This is not a final ruling on any individual flight.

Refunds, re-routing and care

EU261 normally covers departures from the EU regardless of airline, and arrivals from outside the EU when operated by an EU airline. If a covered flight is cancelled, choose a refund, re-routing at the earliest opportunity or a later suitable date subject to availability.

While waiting for the earliest re-routing, care may include reasonable refreshments, communication and necessary hotel accommodation with transport. These rights remain even if extraordinary circumstances exclude fixed compensation.

Your individual journey matters

Fixed compensation requires a separate assessment of the cause, route, actual arrival delay, personal cancellation notice and offered re-routing. Notice at least 14 days before departure normally excludes cancellation compensation. A long arrival delay may qualify if the other conditions are met.
